My Ideal Client

I work with adults of all ages but I especially seem to be a good fit with middle aged to older adults. My origins as a couples therapist started in 2003 when I worked as a layperson providing premarital counseling in Dubai. That was so fun! My couples then were from all over the world and had all sorts of backgrounds. I continue to love working with diversity, be it people who identify as LGBTQ+ or BIPOC or folks from other countries. Since 2012, I've been providing EMDR--so effective!

My Background and Approach

My approach is eclectic with a firm base in Gestalt Therapy, plus numerous other evidence-based modalities. In my work with you I most likely won't stick to just one methodology but will sense and also ask what is uniquely best for you. There may be tears but there will also be laughter. If all you want are a few sessions, I'm equipped to provide brief therapy, or somewhere in between, but I also do depth work that if you want, can last years. Couples find that I approach them with warmth and support along with incisive questions. And I work with premarital couples, long-term couples and also those divorcing. My work with those who have experienced trauma can be multi-faceted. Some people quickly resolve their issues and others need an empathic and embracing understanding that their childhood was rough--it's gonna take awhile.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Life doesn't come with meaning served to us on a platter; we need to create for ourselves a life of meaning, and this can be accomplished in so many ways! A few examples are: healing from past hurts, gaining appreciation for our strengths and abilities, learning new communication skills, finding ways to connect, being patient while in the midst of change and being willing to let go of beliefs that no longer serve us, mourning what we've lost while making room for what comes next, and relaxing, relaxing, relaxing, :). Mindfulness and compassion are an important part of my practice and I tend to be gentle while also open to irreverence. I'll take what you say seriously but I will also point out that too much seriousness can get in our way. Laughter is the best medicine. Portland's Laughter Yoga is a community that I have been active in for years. I love to take photos, especially of flowers. I'm interested in the world and enjoy learning about it. And I love to read.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Eclectic External link

In my work with people I draw from a background in numerous models. With couples I utilize Gottman principles, attachment styles, personality indicators (Myers Briggs and the Enneagram), Prepare/Enrich, Burns, Fruzetti (DBT), and various other authors including Terry Real, and Nagoski (plus more for intimacy and sexual wellness). And my work with individuals includes Compassion-Focused Therapy, CBT, DBT and Gestalt Therapy.

  • EMDR External link

I began my training with EMDR in 2012 and since then have taken many continuing education courses plus I have attended many sessions of in person EMDR study groups with other clinicians. I call EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) my "weird and magical" therapy. I do resourcing styles of EMDR, work with distressing memories, and EMDR for OCD. Because I primarily use the Flash Technique for work with disturbing memories, I find that the work I do is quite effective on telehealth.
