My Approach to Helping

When you come to therapy, you seek answers to difficult life challenges. Perhaps you lack a sense of purpose, are in a relationship or job that is no longer satisfying or are experiencing overwhelming depression or anxiety. I ground my work in respect and compassion for you because this contributes to the foundation of trust, self-acceptance and courage necessary for you to successfully overcome your difficulties and create the life you want to live. Through the cultivation of mindful awareness and the implementation of proven stress management and emotion regulation skills, I will teach you how to calm anxiety, cope with distressing feelings, access your intuitive wisdom, and review your behaviors and beliefs so that you can commit to those which align with your values. This will help you realize your personal, professional and relationship goals and ultimately experience what all of us want in this life - a greater sense of peace, vitality and happiness.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I have provided mental health and substance abuse counseling in private practice, hospital behavioral health and community mental health settings for the past 30 years. I graduated from Stanford University and received my Masters degree in Clinical Psychology from CIIS, a program which integrates Eastern and Western views on psychology. I have received extensive supervision and have expertise utilizing several evidence-based therapeutic modalities as well as mindfulness-based stress reduction which helps me work effectively with anxiety and mood disorders as well as existential and relationship issues. My mindfulness orientation is informed by over 30 years of meditative practice including residency in a Buddhist monastery. I also have extensive experience working with geriatric clients while employed with Providence Behavioral Health.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Mindfulness-based External link

I have received specialized training in mindfulness-based stress reduction, practiced in a Buddhist monastery, and have integrated mindfulness into my life and professional practice for 30 years. This transformative practice teaches you to identify less with your limiting thoughts and more with pure awareness. By developing more objectivity about the stories you tell yourself about who you are and what is possible, you can experience greater happiness and create the life you choose to live.

  • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) External link

I was supervised for two years by Dr. Matthew McKay, well-known author of multiple CBT texts used in psychology, counseling and social work graduate programs around the world. I have incorporated a CBT orientation in private practice and hospital behavioral health settings for the past 25 years.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

I have extensive training and experience working with relationship issues for individuals and understand the most effective ways to teach you how to reframe problem issues in your relationship and develop the communication skills necessary for you to create a healthy relationship. I was supervised for two years by Dr. Matt McKay who is a respected expert in couples counseling who has written Couples Skills.

  • Anxiety External link

I have utilized CBT and mindfulness-based approaches to manage anxiety for over 25 years in different treatment facilities and in private practice. I have received specialized training in mindfulness-based stress reduction, practiced meditation in a Buddhist monastery, and have used mindfulness meditation in my own life for 35 years. I received two years of supervision from Dr. Matt McKay who has written The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook and The CBT Anxiety Solution Workbook.

  • Depression External link

My expertise utilizing CBT and mindfulness approaches has also been effective with my clients experiencing mood disorders. I have used these orientations in multiple settings along with relational approaches that focus more on your family history and need to connect more personally with me as a real person with whom you have a trusting relationship and not just as a therapist. I also have two years of supervision with Dr. Matt McKay who has written Mind and Emotion and Thoughts and Feelings.
