My Background and Approach

I am solution focused. One of my previous places of employment involved training new staff. This was invaluable experience for me because it taught me the need to adapt my training style to the needs of the people that I worked with. Each person that I work with is unique and requires a slightly different approach. Some individuals prefer assigned homework and other individuals may prefer to work in session on suggested techniques. For this reason, I routinely check in with people that I work with to see what is and is not working in our sessions.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Most of my training and experience has been in working with individuals who have experienced trauma. I previously worked at a homeless shelter where I worked with individuals who struggled with a broad range of challenges that included substance use, mental health issues, job loss, or were fleeing a domestic violence situation. I have hospice and home health experience as well, and have worked at agencies where I primarily worked with couples and provided life coaching as well.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Cultural and Systemic Oppression External link

My graduate program concentrated on incorporating cultural competence in my work with individuals. We examined the effects of ongoing systemic oppression as well as how the dominant narratives effect our sense of person hood. There are multiple realities within a sociopolitical and cultural context that are defined by race, gender, as well economic status.
