My Ideal Client

Do you ever find yourself at odds with yourself? I work best with people who feel internally conflicted about one or many aspects of life, whether in self esteem, relationships and love, artistic and professional achievements, or inexplicable habits and compulsions. If you are afraid of yourself, or what you might be holding on to internally, I offer a starkly nonjudgmental space to say *anything* that comes to mind. I accept parts of you that you may not.

My Approach to Helping

My education is in humanistic, existential, and psychoanalytic approaches to personality maturation. My PhD research focused on Internet Addiction and the way that digital life changes our experiences of ourselves, relationships, and ways we express ourselves. Some notable symptoms of digital culture - that psychotherapy addresses - are alienation, loneliness, increased social comparison, impulsivity, a sense of meaninglessness, and lowered tolerance for frustration and disappointment. As a therapist, I offer a protected space for working through fantasies, dreams, intense affects, and relational and emotional difficulties. Therapy is an opportunity to develop a relationship that supports construction of your individual history and thinking about personal and relationship issues that get pushed to the margins of awareness.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I am constantly in awe of the tenderness, and tenacity, of the human spirit - especially under difficult social and environmental conditions. While therapy addresses self- and relationally-generated obstacles to living fully, external obstacles are ever-present in the clinic. This is why I practice therapy in addition to more overt activism and political participation around universal basic goods, digital and privacy rights, climate justice, and resisting the encroachment of financialization and digital capitalism. I also train and facilitate non-violent communication, in support of our right to education about how to stand for ourselves. I am also a lover of music, dogs, pickleball, and crossword puzzles.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Internet Addiction External link

Internet Addiction encompasses the compulsive use of games, pornography, shopping, and media, and also the difficulties of living in hybrid/virtual environments that over-expose our lives in ways we cannot control. Integrating what you do and who you are online is part of my therapeutic technique.

  • Gender Identity External link

I work with clients exploring their gender identities and working on questions about their self-image and embodiment. I believe gender is not secondary to personality, but pervades how we think, act, love, and operate in the social order.

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

Our greatest vulnerabilities lie with our major relationships. My psychoanalytic approach to therapy is extremely well-suited to working with relationship, marriage, and family issues. I support clients in understanding relationship issues at the root and problem-solving in the present.
