My Ideal Client

I combine supportive cheerleading with truthful reflection to help people transform their lives. I help folks dealing with anxiety, depression/suicidal ideation, complicated grief, trauma, chronic pain, and systemic oppression. I serve adults, teenagers, couples, families, and folks in biological/chosen family or other kinds of relationship dynamics. I love helping couples who have communication challenges.

How I Can Help You

I believe we need empathy, acceptance, support, and accountability in order to heal our old pain and create giant positive changes. I know a lot of tricks and tools that can help change perspectives, stories, habits, patterns, relationships, and eventually, lives. Often, we come to therapy to change a behavior that was originally developed as a helpful strategy. As we learn and grow, we evolve past our own strategic defenses. Too bad our habits and patterns don’t always get the memo! We can learn to shift stubborn patterns of protection, in order to find joy and connection. Sometimes, we make change one breath at a time. Other times, there are body based exercises we can use to release stress and tension. And still other times, we have to challenge systems and narratives that don’t support our values. Clients generally experience improvement in the first month, and find growth in goal areas throughout the course of therapy.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe that all people are worthy of dignity and respect, no matter what their circumstances. In the past, I have worked as a social worker, an advocate for accessibility, an environmental activist, a theatre artist, and a writer. I currently work as a therapist, an acupuncturist and a Trauma Informed Care trainer. I play multiple hand drums, including djembe, tar, doumbek, and am learning to play the Irish bodhran. Much of my stress relief comes from hanging out with the natural world, including playing with my dogs, and hikes in the PNW. I'm a world traveler, and have been to Nepal, Israel, Palestine, Bali, Germany, Iceland, Scotland, Greece, Australia, and Italy, to name a few. I have family in Eastern Europe and plan to travel to Poland and Russia at some point.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • EMDR External link

When memories or experiences from the past continue to negatively influence the present, EMDR can often help. I use a trauma-informed and attachment based EMDR to help heal old wounds and decrease emotional triggers.

  • Couples Counseling External link

I work with people in all kinds of relationships who want to communicate better, solve problems, rekindle their spark, fight smarter, or move past obstacles.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) External link

When we don’t understand our own behavior and feel frustrated that we can’t immediately change, IFS is often helpful. By understanding the parts of ourselves that try to manage and protect us, we can often find more ease, self-empathy, and motivation to change our lives.

  • Somatic Therapy (Body Centered) External link

After over 20 years as an acupuncturist, I’m convinced that many of our emotional challenges like anger, anxiety, depression, and grief live in the body. Somatic therapy can help uncover and shift uncomfortable feelings and chronic issues that we haven’t been able to talk our way out of.

  • Narrative  External link

It is possible to rewrite old tired stories that we and others keep telling about ourselves. When we shift the narrative, we often get a whole new perspective on problems that have plagued us.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

I work with all kinds of relationships and relationship styles/configurations including monogamous couples, blended families, chosen family, and folks practicing ethical non-monogamy.

  • Chronic Pain or Illness External link

I support folks through chronic pain challenges including exhaustion, hopelessness, frustration with the medical system, changes in function, and ways to cope

  • PTSD External link

I am a trauma specialist, and have worked with trauma for over 20 years, including survivors of assault, combat veterans, survivors of disaster, family trauma, adult children of addicts, oppression trauma, and complicated or sudden loss and grief.

  • Loss or Grief External link

Whether expected or sudden, loss and grief can turn our lives upside down. I help people navigate grief, even when it’s complicated, and find meaning and solid ground.

  • Polyamorous and Open Relationships External link

It can be even more isolating to work through challenges when people don’t understand or accept your relationship style. I work with relationships in all kinds of configurations. LGBTQIA+ and all gender identities are welcome. I believe people can practice ethical non-monogamy and polyamory with honesty, integrity, and satisfaction. I also work with folks who have differences in attachment styles.
