My Ideal Client

I have a passion working with youth and young adults, especially those that identify as LGBTQ+. I want to help clients work through depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, stress, gender dysphoria, identity confusion, and trauma to improve their lives.

My Approach to Helping

I incorporate and practice coping skills in sessions when appropriate to best help clients succeed. I enjoy doing art or playing games with clients to help them build skills and to feel more comfortable in session. I strongly believe that being able to build a therapeutic relationship with clients is important so I enjoy being able to talk with clients and meet them where they are at. I use an eclectic approach but use relational therapy the most often as I have found I can develop a close relationship with clients this way. Depending on the client, I may use cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectal behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, strengths based and trauma informed care. I can also provide EMDR and animal assisted therapy with my therapy dogs in training Autumn and Aurora. I can write WPATH or letters of support for gender affirming surgery to help you access medical care.

Why I Became a Therapist

I became a therapist because of my personal lived experiences which has tremendously helped me relate to my clients and understand them better. I have had a passion to help others since I was a teenager. Social justice is extremely important to me and as a social worker, I consider how our society impacts us individually and collectively. Minorities are especially impacted by our country's values and politics. I have a lot of experience working with LGBTQ+ individuals and have a passion for helping this population through these difficult times. I have continued to choose to be a therapist so I can be the support someone needs in life, to help people cope with their struggles, and for them to obtain the life they desire. I would love to be the person who helps you get through difficult life experiences or mental health challenges in a way that you personally feel is beneficial, whether this means focusing on skills or rather having me listen, validate, and provide emotional support.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Relational  External link

The therapeutic relationship is the key determinate of therapy being successful in reducing or managing symptoms and accomplishing treatment goals. By using a relational approach, I can help clients feel I am a safe trusted supportive person in life which allows us to make progress together. Relational therapy is my main approach as I truly value the relationships I develop with clients. I have found it to be the reason why client's continue to meet with me and report liking me as a therapist.

  • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) External link

I use CBT with clients to help challenge negative or irrational thoughts to reduce anxiety and depression. We work together over time to identify more positive realistic beliefs or thought patterns to replace the negative. This type of therapy can also address low self esteem or negative view of self.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) External link

I utilize DBT coping skills for interpersonal relationships, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation. Client's have an option of using worksheets for these skills if they would like.

  • EMDR External link

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help you process trauma in a way that tends to be less triggering than traditional talk therapy and can offer successful results quicker as well. It can also help change thought processes related to anxiety or depression. Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Child or Adolescent Issues External link

I specialize in working adolescents and young adults and they are my preferred age range for clients as I feel I can build a good relationship and I love being able to offer support to them during difficult times. I ensure that my clients have privacy and only disclose specifics shared with me to parents when I am given permission by the child unless it is a safety concern. This helps youth feel they can trust me. Parent consults and family sessions may occur when appropriate.

  • Depression External link

Depression is also common with clients that I work with. I help clients build tools to help them manage their depression and incorporate activities to build more positivity in their lives while helping them reduce the negative thoughts they experience. Improving a client's self image is another thing I would love to help clients with. Suicidal thoughts and self harm are something that I help clients work through to ensure safety.

  • LGBTQ Issues External link

I specialize in helping individuals in the LGBTQ+ population. This is true of those questioning their gender or sexuality, as well as those that have passed that stage but are struggling with their identity, whether this is due to personal/family/society beliefs and values. Additionally, clients secure in their gender and sexual identity deserve to work with someone who understands how their life can be impacted ongoing by stigma and culture. I do write WPATH letters for gender affirming care.

  • Anxiety External link

Anxiety is extremely common with the clients I work with, especially since COVID started. I help clients learn and implement coping skills so that the anxiety becomes more manageable. When appropriate, I also work with clients to challenge negative and irrational beliefs that cause them to experience general anxiety or panic attacks and replace it with more realistic thoughts.

  • PTSD External link

Many people have experienced traumatic life experiences that cause them some level of distress. It is important that they have a therapist who can work with them through this when they feel ready. I ensure that a client has grounding skills before processing trauma to reduce activation, flooding, dissociation, or other trauma symptoms from occurring and causing additional distress. I am certified to use EMDR to treat trauma. I also use a relational narrative approach and trauma focused CBT.
