My Ideal Client

On the surface, you have everything under control - yet you carry an iceberg's worth of emotion underneath. It's difficult to give space to your feelings and thoughts, or to communicate them to others. You're stuck in unhelpful patterns, but change feels threatening. You feel lonely and you long to be seen, but you consistently put the needs of others before your own. I can help you understand yourself and your experiences, get out of your comfort zone, and tap into joy.

My Background and Approach

I have a Master's degree in Community Counseling from Seattle University and I am a licensed therapist in Oregon and Washington. I have specific training in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP); but I like to pepper in concepts and skills from a wide variety of clinical styles. I worked in sex education in the past, and I tend to have a sex-positive and body-neutral lens. I recognize that many of my identities afford me certain privileges; I strive to stay aware of these, and to work with each client from a culturally humble perspective. First and foremost, I am a client-centered therapist; as such, I draw on these and other modalities flexibly, in order to best serve your individual needs. I will always endeavor to hold compassionate, non-judgmental space for you, while simultaneously challenging you to grow into the person you want to be, and the life you want to live.

More About the People I Treat

I especially love working with adults who identify as people pleasers. Maybe you feel at the mercy of your emotions, and either try to stuff them down or find yourself crying over things that seem like "no big deal." When you were growing up, you got the message that you had to maintain harmony, which sometimes leads you to feel like you are "too much," just for having feelings and needs of your own. Fitting in or "going with the flow" might have felt so important at one point in your life that you now aren't totally sure what you really want; or perhaps having to follow this mandate put you into uncomfortable or unsafe experiences, where you felt powerless. You matter. My goal is to help you believe that, by figuring out what's really important to YOU. I want to help you make connections between past and present experiences; to challenge the negative beliefs that keep you small; and to craft a new philosophy or personal statement that guides you to a life rich with meaning.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Historical Trauma External link

I am recently trained in Eye Movement & Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR helps people heal from the symptoms and emotional distress of traumatic memories. It uses bilateral stimulation - such as tapping, eye movement, or sound - to enhance information processing and transform the meaning of painful events.

  • Anxiety External link

I'll help you identify unconscious patterns in your thinking and behavior that may not be serving you; and we will practice skills to tolerate difficult experiences and regulate your nervous system. Some common themes with anxiety are loneliness and discomfort with uncertainty. We will work on accepting uncertainty, and showing up as our authentic selves in order to connect with others and ourselves.

  • OCD External link

I am trained in Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) therapy, which has demonstrated success in reducing symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. During and after sessions, you will participate in "exposures" designed to generate distress - yes, on purpose! - while simultaneously avoiding any "compulsions" or "rituals" that you might typically use to try to reduce discomfort. By doing so, you will learn that you CAN tolerate distressing experiences, and teach OCD that it's not the boss of you.
