My Ideal Client

Has it happened again? Is this another post-argument between you & your partner. Each of you may be feeling unseen & disconnected. You both want to connect together, but find it a challenge. You might find that you're disagreeing over the same things time & again. This is the music that both of you are dancing to. I work with couples to help create a different song/cancíon. We'll work together on unpacking what gets in the way of connection in order to grow a secure bond.

My Background and Approach

I am a first-generation Latino with white privilege. I grew up in a low-socioeconomic neighborhood. I began this journey with a desire for couples to build healthy foundations together, & for individuals to grow as they navigate the world around them. I have over three years experience in higher education supporting young adults. I am currently a master's candidate enrolled in a marriage, couple and family counseling program at George Fox University. You can expect me to show up as the unique me because I value you bringing your unique self. I utilize Emotionally Focused Therapy. It's an attachment-based approach that emphasizes change occurring in the therapy room with an exploration of core emotions at the root. This type of therapy is backed by research to be effective. I have completed Step 1 toward becoming a certified EFT therapist.

Why I Became a Therapist

I became a therapist through my own journey of seeking a Latinx counselor that could provide culturally-specific care. I wanted to feel like I could bring my cultural identity into the counseling space. I believe that healthy relationships are possible. Healthy relationships and coping skills have a huge impact on those around us. It takes a ton of courage to step into therapy.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Emotionally Focused External link

I have completed a week-long training (Externship) in Emotionally Focused Therapy. This is the first step towards certification. The Externship training focused on exploring the role of attachment, emotions and patterns that can occur in relationships. This training helped me to learn skills with how to help individuals with how to engage in new patterns/cycles that lead to connection.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

I specialize in relationship counseling as a master's candidate in a marriage, couple and family counseling program. I have taken a week-long training (Externship) in Emotionally Focused Therapy to gain skills with how to help facilitate meaningful conversation between parters.

  • Cultural and Systemic Oppression External link

Aside from my own lived experience as a Latino man, I have led trainings with professional and student groups in exploring the role of culture, racial and ethnic identity formation, and tools for navigating racism.
