My Ideal Client

I tend to work best with those who value a relational approach to therapy as my approach tends to be sensitive, perceptive, intimate, co-regulating, and attachment-informed. Overall, my ideal client is anyone who is dedicated to self-work and interested in exploring their inner experience. Clients that have been drawn to work with me include: the LGBTQIA+ community, neurodivergent clients (autism spectrum, ADHD, and highly sensitive people), codependent clients, and older adults.

My Background and Approach

In 2019, I began to study psychotherapy in order to pursue my goals of providing self-empowering holistic services. I graduated from the two-year Hakomi training at the META (Mindfulness Experiential Therapy Approaches) Institute in 2021 and from the University of the Cumberlands Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2023. From 2022-2023 I studied emotionally focused therapy (EFT) with Dr. Sue Johnson and began seeing couples in clinical practice at Liberation Institute. My approach to psychotherapy is first and foremost: *Relational & connected *Attentive *Collaborative *Humanistic *Person-Centered *Empathic *Compassionate *Validating *Experiential *Attachment theory-based *Trauma-informed *Focused on changing root-cause neurobiological & relational systems (rather than focusing on symptom management) ...and also: *Strengths-based *Empowering *Encouraging *Non-pathologizing *Grounded in scientific research & theory (particularly neuroscience) *Holistic & Somatic

Why I Became a Therapist

In 2015, while taking time off to recover from a work injury, I went on my first 10-day meditation retreat. During this meditation retreat, I discovered the profound connection between body and mind, and the healing power of mindfulness. Further experiences have led me to pursue my deep fascination with psychosomatic processes and the power of relational & psychological healing in psychotherapy. In 2019 I began transitioning out of nursing and started training in somatic therapy. While nursing has been a valuable experience (helping me with clients navigating medical systems, medical trauma, & death), I have found that I have the greatest impact on client wellness through psychotherapy. In the 90s, the US Public Health Service published that 7 out of 10 of the top health risks in the US were rooted not in biology, but in behavioral choices. This understanding, that psychology underlies both physical and mental wellness, has greatly inspired my choice to become a therapist.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Hakomi External link

I am a graduate of the META (Mindfulness Experiential Therapy Approaches) Institute & have been practicing somatic-based mindfulness-based experiential therapy (Hakomi and Hakomi derivative therapies) since 2019. I have been practicing meditation daily since my first meditation retreat in 2015, and am happy to share this skill with clients. My mindfulness approach is attachment and trauma-informed, as mindfulness requires sensitivity and can be challenging or triggering for some clients.

  • Emotionally Focused External link

In 2022 I began studying emotionally focused therapy (EFT) for couples with Dr. Sue Johnson. I have been working with couples of all walks ever since: pregnant, married, polyamorous, monogamous, trans, queer, non-binary, and asexual couples. In EFT, I work with relationships to: *Identify and step out of subconscious feedback systems *Communicate clearly *Respond more effectively *Work as a team *Increase engagement and availability *Repair relationship injuries & resolve relationship traumas

  • Attachment Theory External link

I believe in the power and primacy of relationship when it comes to psychotherapy. In therapy, we will explore your relationship to relationship and your attachment strategies. Whether you come to me for individual or couples work, we will work towards earned secure attachment for you. I want you to be able to enjoy the benefits of attachment security: health, purpose, emotional regulation, resiliency to trauma & grief, and rich & stable intimate relationships.

  • Depth Therapy External link

The Hakomi therapy that I offer is a psychodynamic depth-psychotherapy. In Hakomi, we use mindfulness within a safe container to explore and integrate subconscious material. I will help you understand how your current day experience is related to and influenced by this core material from your early childhood. We will explore childhood memories and offer healing attention to the deepest parts of your self and inner child.

  • Somatic Therapy (Body Centered) External link

I have been trained in Hakomi, a somatic-based psychotherapy. I utilize a somatic understanding and techniques as part of a holistic way of understanding and treating the self. In therapy, we will include attention to your body and sensations as part of your self-awareness and ability to emotionally regulate. We may experiment with postures, spatial dynamics, movement, and touch as part of the therapy process. My somatic approach is also informed by polyvagal theory & somatic experiencing.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

I am trained in emotionally focused therapy (EFT) for relationships. This approach can help platonic, monogamous, and polyamorous relationships to change underlying negative relationship patterns. It has been found to be clinically effective with low relapse. In EFT, we work to: *Identify and step out of subconscious feedback cycles *Communicate more clearly *Respond more effectively *Work as a team *Increase engagement & availability *Repair relationship injuries *Strengthen bonds & intimacy

  • Self-Esteem External link

Low self-esteem is correlated with depression, anxiety and PTSD. I use mindfulness-based experiential therapy to explore the subconscious mind, and repair the self & psyche through memory reconsolidation and positive experiences. Unlike some other forms of therapy, my methods aim to use neuroplasticity from mindfulness-induced states to rewire the brain and eventually eliminate the need for maintenance therapy. I aim to take you to complete resolution of inner conflict to full self love.

  • Personal Growth External link

I don't see therapy as merely the healing of pathology, but as a method of self-actualization. I aim to help you become the most empowered, authentic, and loving version of yourself through mindfulness-based experiential therapy. Unlike some therapies that have a more limited scope or focus on treating pathology; my approach of mindfulness-based experiential therapy allows for further expansion into contentment, wellness, joy, resilience, and the pursuit of your desires.

  • Men's Issues External link

I help men navigate the complexity & nuance of their experience within the current complicated culture of masculinity, postmodernism, and patriarchy. I understand that men are often not what they appear to be & hold the unfolding of men's personal growth as sacred and tender. Together we can explore your relationship to power, sex, assertiveness, anger, & anything else. As a gender-fluid human, & a man who has embraced my assigned gender, I hope that I can be an ally to you on your journey.

  • PTSD External link

I have helped many clients with both PTSD and C-PTSD to re-regulate their nervous systems to a place of balance where they can enjoy life. For clients with PTSD, I use coregulation, somatic techniques, polyvagal theory, grounding, and mindfulness-based experiential therapy in order to ground & calm the nervous system. It is possible to heal, and I use a gentle holistic approach to working with trauma. Due to my experience as an RN, I am suited to helping clients with medical-related trauma.
