My Background and Approach
For the first twenty years of my career, I was a creative writing professor at universities where I helped students tell their stories. After earning advanced degrees in creative writing, film studies, and a doctorate in English, I retrained in couple and family therapy to pursue my long-held goal of becoming a therapist. My experience, humor, patience, and insight will help you to identify new plot lines in your story, reaffirm your sense of purpose, and strengthen bonds between you and your loved ones. My therapeutic approach with couples integrates Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) and Gottman Research Methods. With individuals, I draw on Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), as well as a psychodynamic approach to better understand how your family of origin and upbringing are impacting you now. With families, I utilize an approach that integrates Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) and Milan Systemic Family Therapy.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I love to help couples, families, and individuals catalyze their strengths, remove obstacles, face new challenges, and tap into their resilience. In short, I can help you to summon your inner resources to change. Because I spent many years abroad--in Italy, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, Slovakia, and Ireland--I continue to draw on a wealth of experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, identities, traditions, and perspectives. Finding the right fit in a therapist is essential to forging a healing relationship. If it seems like I could be the right therapist for you, I hope you'll take the next step to reach out for a free 15-minute consultation, where we'll explore what you're seeking help with. Currently, I'm available to see couples, clients in polyamorous relationships, families, and adult individuals.
