My Ideal Client

I work with adult individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+ concerns, relational problems, and childhood trauma.

My Background and Approach

My work with clients integrates Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness techniques. IFS is depth-oriented work that allows clients to learn to relate differently to themselves by increasing awareness of, and holding space for, inner "parts" that have sometimes taken on extreme roles associated with past traumatic events. ACT provides a lovely counterpoint to this, with it's core processes mapping onto life experiences in a more practical, skills-based way. Both of these approaches can facilitate greater awareness of patterns that may be holding you back, and increase motivation to intervene in those patterns to create new outcomes. I hold a Master of Arts in Professional Mental Health Counseling from Lewis and Clark College (2020), and a BA in Psychology from the University of Oregon (2003). I have done extensive study and training in ACT and mindfuless skills, and I have completed the official Level 1 training in IFS.

My Values as a Therapist

I’m grateful to live in a time where work is being done to de-stigmatize mental health conditions, as they have long been a natural part of the human condition. Shame, self-judgement, and comparative thinking regarding inevitable inner experiences like anxiety and negative mood states are habits of mind that can be unlearned. I am aware of the privileges afforded by my white, able body and am committed to furthering my awareness of systematic oppression.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) External link

I have completed the official Level 1 training program for this model of therapy. I have also completed several continuing education courses, done extensive readings, and done IFS-specific consultation. This model appeals to me for its non-pathologizing stance and built-in supports for client autonomy.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) External link

I have taken 2 training courses in the ACT model (in 2021 and 2023), and have benefited from ACT concepts on a personal level as well! I apply the model flexibly and especially enjoy guiding clients through exercises to facilitate defusion from thoughts (i.e. stepping back into the "observing self").

  • Mindfulness-based External link

I've done extensive study of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) model and yoga and meditation are a part of my personal self-care routine. I employ a trauma-informed, individualized approach when offering mindfulness exercises in session. This allows clients to engage with a "dosage" and style of mindfulness that works well in the moment, and to feel comfortable interrupting the exercise at any point.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Anxiety External link

I work with anxiety using both top-down and bottom-up methods. Concepts from Acceptance and Commitment Theory and other forms of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy are helpful in providing a "mental map" for action and can be used as "leverage" when feeling stuck in negative or anxious thoughts. Bottom-up methods include exercises like meditation, grounding in the 5 senses, and mindful movement. These exercises facilitate awareness, and increase your ability to stay with these challenging feelings.

  • Personal Growth External link

As a therapist, I've been extensively trained in reflective listening skills. The idea of reflective listening may be relatively simple, but it's application is nuanced, and it is a powerful means of cultivating the skill of self-awareness required for personal growth. I also frequently use concepts I've learned in my study of the Internal Family Systems model to help clients make sense of and resolve internal conflicts that may arise from simultaneously holding multiple perspectives.

  • Autism External link

I practice neurodivergent-affirming care. In a nutshell, this means our work will emphasize strengths over differences, and affirm your lived experiences. I understand the challenges of living in a society that is not set up to understand neurodivergent perspectives. I place great importance on both autonomy and authenticity, and I give clients lots of space to provide feedback on what is and is not working for them in therapy. I have a naturally slow pace in session and many find this helpful.

  • Gender Identity External link

My work in this area leans on both both academic training and lived experiences. As a non-binary human who has long worked to overturn gender roles, I am deeply supportive of both trans and nonbinary clients. I've worked with a wide variety of individuals, and have helped to address concerns ranging from dysphoria and coming out, to the invisibility of passing post-transition. I'm here to support you in becoming authentically you, and at home in your body.

  • Body Image Issues External link

I have done professional training and study in this area and am Health at Every-Size informed, and aware of the presence of toxic cultural influences around dieting and fatphobia. I am accepting of clients as they are and believe that the work of unplugging from biased sources and de-programming cultural myths around our bodies is both valuable and necessary.
