My Approach to Helping

My primary approach to therapy is offering a compassionate, non-judgmental and strength based dynamic within our relationship. I meet my clients where they are at. I employ an integrative mix of person-centered, cognitive behavioral, and motivational interviewing counseling techniques. I help my clients with goal-setting, effective communication, self-care, self-exploration, and accountability. Creating positive and healthy relationships with clients is a powerful experience that I am forever grateful for.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I decided to become a counselor after noticing that all of my other choices of work were in the helping professions. I worked for residence life departments at Oregon State University and Southern Oregon university, and have over a decade of experience working at both day and residential youth summer camp programs. I have worked in the mental health field since 2009, when I began working with high school students in rural Oregon as well as Rogue Community College counseling center in Medford, OR for my graduate school internship. I became clinically licensed while working at a large counseling agency in the Portland area in 2014, then spent two years working as a substance use and abuse counselor in South Dakota. In 2016 I moved to the Oregon Coast and began a private practice, which I transitioned to Portland in 2019. In addition to private practice, I am currently the lead field therapist for a wilderness therapy program based on the Olympic Peninsula, where I work with at-risk youth

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Wilderness Therapy External link

I have worked as a wilderness therapist since 2018. Doing therapy in the outdoors, when possible, is the best environment in which to foster growth and healing. Seeing ones self in and apart of nature brings us a deep sense of gratitude

  • Existential External link

Looking for the answers to the questions that really matter. Why am I here? What is this all about? What should I do? Who am I? I am endlessly fascinated and impassioned by the exploration of the human experience. I have studied mindfulness meditation approaches as well and incorporate this orientation in my work with clients.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Men's Issues External link

I enjoy working with men and exploring what masculinity means for the individual and for society as a whole. I find that many men struggle with having an emotional language. Helping men be better versions of themselves for their loved ones and families is wonderful work I enjoy.

  • Child or Adolescent Issues External link

I have experience working for an intensive experiential wilderness therapy program in Washington state. The average student in our program struggled with chemical dependency, behavioral problems, communication, and high levels of family conflict. I have years of experience working with all parties to help heal and seek resolution.

  • Depression External link

My approach in working with clients with depression is to look at various spheres of influence and identifying problematic factors in the life of a client to intervene with.
