My Approach to Helping

I use a holistic, compassionate and client-centered approach utilizing your strengths and learning style to individualize your therapy course; my toolbox is made up of techniques/ interventions from an array of models/theories and my approach is also informed by what we now know about the brain. For those with alcohol/drug use/addiction, I will work from an abstinence-based or harm-reduction stance depending on individual goals and challenges.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I have almost 40 years experience as a psychiatric and addictions nurse and clinical social worker (LCSW) and addiction counselor (CADCI), in hospital, residential, and outpatient mental health and addictions settings. My experience is with children, adolescents, young adults, adults and families. I have a passion for working with people who struggle with addiction and I will provide support for facing the difficulties of early recovery or when life's hurdles challenge recovery along the way. I also have worked with health care professionals with mental health/addiction problems and can help support the unique struggles of working in healthcare and managing self-care. I also have experience and enjoy working with college students.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Solution Focused Brief Therapy External link

Going to therapy doesn't always need to be for a long time. Depending on the client's needs, solution focused brief therapy can quickly address current challenges from a strengths-based solution focused stance. I utilized this approach a great deal in an university student health clinic setting and found it very effective.

  • Mindfulness-based External link

According one of my favorite authors and experts in mental health, Daniel Siegel,'recent studies of mindfulness practices reveal that they can result in profound improvements in a range of physiological, mental, and interpersonal domains in our lives. ' I weave mindfulness into every therapeutic interaction as I believe it is the foundation for mental wellness.

  • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) External link

We are not our thoughts and feelings and yet we often function as if we believe we are. CBT helps create some objectivity about our thoughts and feelings, as well as increase our capacity to challenge and change them thereby improving our mood and beliefs about ourselves. I like using an integrative approach that often incorporates CBT skills.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Drug Dependence / Abuse / Addiction External link

Despite our society still stigmatizing this challenge, it affects us all either within ourselves, our families, our workplaces...everywhere. The human brain is vulnerable to chemicals and habits. I have many years of experience working in addiction and dual diagnosis treatment and I have a passion for working with individuals and families impacted by this common struggle. I believe in recovery.

  • Self-Esteem External link

What a person thinks about themselves can hugely impact every aspect of their life. I enjoy helping folks explore where these stories about themselves come from and then write new stories.

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

Our connections to others are the greatest assets and challenges. Outside perspective and support can be really helpful to address relationship struggles. Communication glitches are a common problem. I utilize Non-violent communication skills, family systems, narrative and other models/theories very effectively with individuals, couples and families.

  • Loss or Grief External link

To live is to experience loss. Grieving is a necessary and natural process; our culture and busy lives don't always support this process and people can get really stuck. Personally and professionally, I have a great deal of experience in helping people move through their grief process.

  • Anxiety External link

In my experience working with clients, anxiety is a very common challenge for many. It hijacks the brain and can really inhibit living life fully. Fortunately, there are many ways I can help a person develop skills and ways to manage and decrease their anxiety
