My Ideal Client

Have you tried traditional counseling and felt unsatisfied? Do you have trauma, anxiety or need tools to take charge of your own healing? I want you to give you these tools and techniques to make your life better. You will heal past traumas and grow into better versions of yourself. From anxiety attacks to anger management, depression to gender dysphoria and transitioning, I would love to share the tools you need to heal and grow.

How I Can Help You

Often times the thoughts and behaviors that got you through difficult and dangerous times in the past work against you in the present. This patterning is in your nervous system--your body, and it is through your body and mind that it is best addressed. I use evidence based, scientifically proven tools and techniques (the polyvagal theory and practice, meditative movement, and others), to help you heal the destructive patterning that is counterproductive to your growth.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I have worked as a therapist in a wide span of settings from community mental health to private practice. These include: the National University of Naturopathic Medicine student clinic, the YWCA community mental health clinic, William Temple House community mental health clinic, the Russell Street Counseling Center, and the HumanEx Academy. My first session as a therapist was in 2005 and I've been practicing ever since. I have a Ph.D. in Depth Psychology with an Emphasis in Depth Psychotherapy, and an M.A. in Counseling Psychology with an Emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. My B.A. is in philosophy with a minor in sociology from Kenyon College. I have also been practicing qigong for over 26 years.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Depth Therapy External link

Depth psychology acknowledges that often times we are unaware of why we do what we do. Instead of merely addressing symptoms, depth therapy seeks to get the the root of problems by addressing the underlying dynamics that cause them. I will soon have a Ph.D. in Depth Psychology and my training has been explicitly depth oriented since I began my graduate training.

  • Somatic Therapy (Body Centered) External link

If you want a tool to use between sessions that includes the body you've come to the right place. Talk therapy is great, and sometimes it alone is not enough. I wrote my dissertation on using meditative movement to support and add to the healing and growth of traditional talk therapy, and I have been practicing this form of moving meditation--that is part of Chinese medicine--for 26+ years every day for an average of 2+ hours. Let me show you how to help yourself with this tool.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • PTSD External link

Most people are familiar with fight/flight and freeze/please as responses to dangerous circumstances.  The Polyvagel Theory is an elaboration on these ideas.  I use a Polyvagel approach to help you get back to feeling safe after you have experienced trauma.  People usually get stuck in either fight/flight or freeze/please mode after traumatic experiences.  As a result the entire world begins to like a threat.  The Polyvagel approach helps restore safety and regulation so that you feel better.

  • Anger Management External link

Anger is often a very healthy emotion to feel however problems arise when its expression is misguided. When used properly anger can generate tremendous change and clarity. My approach to working with anger comes from a mind/body orientation--acknowledging that the body influences thoughts and emotions. I use the moving meditation of qigong in talk-therapy sessions to specifically address anger.

  • Codependency External link

We are all dependent on others, but like most things, when that dependence becomes excessive problems arise. I help people return to themselves in a new way so that they begin to trust and rely on themselves in ways that perhaps they've never known. The journey from dependence to independence to interdependence is often a very rich and rewarding one.

  • Anxiety External link

Anxiety can be a form of blocked creativity. It can also stem from worry and fear. My approach to working with anxiety comes from a mind/body orientation--acknowledging that the body influences the mind's state of being as well as the emotions. I incorporate the moving meditation of qigong into talk-therapy sessions with specific exercises for anxiety.

  • Depression External link

Depression can be a form of anger turned inward, it can also stem from worry and fear. I approach depression from a mind/body orientation--acknowledging that the body influences the mind's state of being as well as the emotions. I incorporate the moving meditation of qigong into talk-therapy sessions with specific exercises for depression.
