My Ideal Client

"Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope." (Maya Angelou) Children & families encounter stressors in life that can be overwhelming - grief, loss, medical & environmental traumas. Children (even infants) are very sensitive to these stressors but they can recover with the support of parents/caregivers. I support children and families who have been through challenging experiences to grow together, heal and thrive.

My Approach to Helping

My approach to helping is holistic, compassion-focused, nature-based and experiential, including animal-assisted therapeutic activities. I have specialized training in Child Parent Psychotherapy - compassionately addressing complex issues impacting young children and their caregivers. I also specialize in treating youth and adults experiencing grief, loss, trauma, chronic and acute illness/pain, mood disorders and neurodivergence. My life experience with parenthood, grief/loss and caregiving for aging parents inform my practice and my connection with clients. I continuously cultivate a special interest in supporting grievers including those experiencing traumatic grief, end of life, and eco-grief. I have experience in supporting young grievers and their caregivers through my work at The Dougy Center for Grieving Children and Families, a place with so much heart and deep understanding.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I understand that play is a window into the internal world of the child and that holistic healing occurs across the lifespan in emotionally attuned relationships. I am passionate about the power of nature to awaken us to the present moment and spark the body's innate capacity to heal. I believe that experiential and animal-assisted therapies are especially effective at deepening each client's awareness and understanding of themselves, their relationships and their environment. I have worked previously as a licensed special education teacher, a parent support coach, and an education policy advocate. I hold a B.S. in Human Development and Social Policy from Northwestern University and advanced degrees in Public Policy, Special Education, and Professional Mental Health Counseling. I am honored to walk alongside my clients in open-hearted connection as they grow toward healing and vitality. I look forward to meeting you.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Experiential External link

I see clients at The Center at Heron Hill, a unique outpatient mental health clinic located on a 60-acre farm just outside of Portland in Canby, Oregon. Our agency offers an Ecotherapy experience that utilizes nature and animals as well as a wide variety of experiential activities such as mindfulness, gardening activities, embodiment, movement and yoga-based activities, art activities, archery, slack line, sand tray, fire building, and opportunities to experience equine-assisted therapy.

  • Play Therapy  External link

Play is a window into the internal world of the child. Through play children are able to communicate their needs and feelings. Helping parents and other caregivers understand the unique emotional, social and developmental needs of their children is at the heart of my practice. I utilize a nature-based, child-centered approach to play therapy, often incorporating animal-assisted experiences. My approach is grounded in evidence-based practices, attachment theory, and interpersonal neurobiology.
