My Ideal Client

I have a particular interest in helping people in search of meaning in the midst of today’s world, in particular members of the LGBTQ+ community or those longing for a connection with nature and spirituality; people beyond their first year of substance use or addictive behavior recovery looking to heal from family-of-origin issues; and transplants from other cultures. I work especially well with folx looking to dive deep, and motivated to learn and reflect.

My Background and Approach

I identify as a cisgender, white, able-bodied gay woman of Mediterranean, working-class origin. I grew up around Marseille, a large port city in the South of France, of second-generation Italian/Sardinian and third-generation Spanish immigrants. I was the first person in my family to go to high school. The privilege of a free education system there allowed me to earn a Masters degree in English and my first love was literary translation. I have lived in Portland for over 20 years. Authenticity is a big part of who I am, and it is reflected in sessions. My approach is integrative and relational. I use a combination of several kinds of evidence-based therapies based on your particular needs at any given moment, blending talk-, mindfulness- and somatic-based therapies. I often incorporate specific cognitive-behavioral skills and neuroscience-based education as indicated to help you reach your goals. More info at: https://www.caravancounselingpdx.com/about

Why I am a Good Fit for You

If you are contending with: depression and anxiety; internalized shame and self-criticism, feeling like who you are or what you do isn't good enough; relational or intergenerational trauma (if you feel stuck in the same patterns, whether in your personal relationship or at work, this may be part of the issue); Marginalized identity/ies; or you've felt like a misfit for most of your life, and you feel something is holding you back; If you long to get off the hamster wheel, you long for a connection to *something* you aren't quite sure what it is, but you sense you won't find it within the box of unrestrained capitalism; If you tend to care a lot about things, and maybe you feel a bit isolated... ... I want to invite you to explore with me the patterns and fears that get in the way of reclaiming your inner essence, power and deepest purpose. This means I will also help you explore your values and strengths, so you can inhabit them fully and rewrite the narrative of who you are.

We talk about "mental" health as though mind and body were disconnected. Not only do I see people as whole beings, I also see us as part of a web of other beings, communities, the Earth, and the Universe. I use mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral, and relational psychodynamic talk therapies, as much as I use somatic practices, visualizations and science-based psychoeducation. If it speaks to you, we can incorporate ecopsychology and earth-based spirituality into your treatment plan.

For the 10 years before going back to grad school, I was a paralegal at a civil rights / employment law firm serving people who had been discriminated against at work or suffered from police brutality. I also wrote 2 bills, one of them later becoming law. Over the course of these 10 years, deep internal changes, including coming out, led me to want to help people in ways deeper than my role as a paralegal allowed me to, but I am still very much an advocate at heart and in the therapy room.
